青花瓷是釉下彩，氧化鈷顏料上色後，會塗上一層玻璃釉，經過1400度左右高溫燒造而成。過程中高溫會令玻璃釉結晶並隔絕鈷料，因此釉下彩青花不會釋出有毒有害的物質。
傳統手繪青花首先要構圖設計，用鉛筆勾勒一下圖案再進行繪畫，最後分水工序，青花料會蓋住鉛筆痕跡，高溫一燒，痕跡就會全部消失。
因為青花料比較特殊，一旦落筆就很難或者無法擦掉，除非用刀片把青花料刮掉。如果坯體的畫面比較細，有機會刮掉緊貼住畫的東西。如果坯體比較薄的情況，很容易發生刮穿坯體的情況。只有有豐富經驗的師傅才能掌握技巧。
分水需要掌握整個渲染過程，必須要從濃到淡，各級的分水都得掌握，青花料跟普通繪畫的色彩染料不同，燒制前後的顏色完全不同，青花料的濃淡色澤完全依靠工藝師經驗調製和把握，分水之後的畫面在未燒之前看起來顏色都差不多，燒出來後它的顏色的過渡就會凸顯出很多層次。
