Pastel is a type of overglaze color. It is painted on the glaze of the fired plain ware and then baked in the kiln at a temperature of 600 to 900 degrees Celsius. Pastel porcelain is a new type of overglaze color created on the basis of Kangxi five colors and influenced by the enamel production process. It first appeared in the late Kangxi period and has remained popular in subsequent dynasties.

Pastels are blended with arsenic-containing glass white. Due to the opacifying effect of arsenic, the glass white has an opaque feeling. When blended with various colors, it will produce a powdery effect. The colors range from pure red to pure yellow. The color tone becomes an opaque, pink and light tone. The artist controls the amount of glass white added to render a series of tones of different shades, creating a pigment that gives a pink and soft feeling.
