Craftsmanship: Jingdezhen enamel color

Craft characteristics: Enamel, one of the porcelain decoration techniques. Enamel is an overglaze decoration technique that transplants the "enamel painting technique" to the porcelain body. It was founded in the late Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty. By the Yongzheng period, enamel color was further developed.

Enamel-colored porcelain was instructed by Emperor Kangxi in the late Kangxi period of the Qing Dynasty. The enamel painting technique was introduced by A new variety of colored porcelain created by placing the copper body on the porcelain body. The greatest output occurred during the Yongzheng and Qianlong periods, but after Qianlong there were few productions.

During the Qianlong period, the enamel-colored porcelain collected in the palace was concentrated in Duan Ning Hall. According to archives, there were more than 400 pieces. Enamel-colored porcelain was a work of art exclusively for emperors and empresses to appreciate, and the palace control was extremely strict. The white porcelain body required to make it was provided by Jingdezhen Royal Kiln Factory. After being transported to the palace, the enamel was made at the Manufacturing Office of the Ministry of Internal Affairs under the emperor's instructions. It was carefully painted by the palace painter, inscribed with poems and signatures by the palace calligrapher, and finally baked in a charcoal furnace at about 600°C.

Enamel material is a special artificially made colored material. Before the sixth year of Yongzheng reign (1728), it had to be imported from Europe. After the sixth year of Yongzheng reign, the Qing Palace Manufacturing Office was able to self-smelt more than 20 kinds of enamel materials, and the color types were relatively large. Imported color materials became more abundant, which led to rapid development in the production of enamel-colored porcelain. The enamel-colored porcelain of the Kangxi period mostly used carmine red, egg yolk and blue as the ground. There was also a unique type of enamel-colored porcelain painted on Yixing purple sand. Typical enamel-colored porcelain from the Yongzheng and Qianlong periods is an art treasure that combines poetry, calligraphy, painting, and sealing. It is a product of the peak period of ancient Chinese colored porcelain craftsmanship.
